1. DEFINE MOVEMENT FOR YOURSELF
How is it differentiated from physical activity and exercise?
Here is number 1 in my list of 10 tips for a movement-rich life. Welcome! I’m so happy that you are interested in learning how to add more beautiful movement to your life. Before embarking on this journey, I challenge you to define what movement means to you. Check out my definitions of the terms: exercise, physical activity, and movement, maybe they will resonate with you.

Exercise is a physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposive in the sense that the improvement or maintenance of one or more components of physical fitness is an objective.
**
Physical activity is any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that result in energy expenditure i.e. calories utilized.
**
Movement is any motion that creates a change in the shape of a body or parts of a body. Movement is not defined by a physiological outcome (caloric expenditure, increased heart rate, perspiration, etc) but by a transition in geometry.

Therefore physical activity (and thus exercise) is movement, but all movement is not physical activity and exercise. The benefits of movement are therefore not limited to traditional fitness. Good movement facilitates operations in almost every human system including your immune, digestive and nervous systems. Do you agree? If yes (and I hope you do) then through this lens you will realize that opportunities for movement-rich living are literally everywhere, all of the time, ripe for the pickin’. So get pickin’ … who’d have thunk it would come down to SHAPES!

MOVEMENT IS ABOUT CHANGING SHAPES. SO CHANGE SHAPES FREQUENTLY.
**
DAY 1: Write down (or take a screenshot of) the definition of movement, stick it somewhere you will see it every day (ex. fridge, bathroom mirror, back of the front door, etc.) and repeat it as a daily mantra for the next few weeks.
